I think it’s fair to say that eventually, we’d have to start talking about Group B on this rally series of ours, and where better to start than the ultimate version of the game changer that shook the world of rallying to it’s core.
The Quattro S1 E2 was a development on the already successful Quattro S1. With the regulations in Group B verging on the ridiculous in the latter years of the ill-fated series, the S1 E2 became renowned as one of the most powerful rally cars ever built, achieving 493 bhp at 8,000 rpm from its turbocharged inline-5 engine, with the last models producing nearly 600 bhp. The S1 E2 also featured that dynamic and aggressive body kit which is recognisable from nearly any distance.

Making it’s debut at the 1985 Rally Argentina, it took regular podiums and won the Rally San Remo in the same year with legend Walter Rohrl at the helm. However, the demise of Group B meant that Audi pulled out of the sport before the Rally Portugal. The S1 E2 would make some further appearances at the hands of Michele Mouton and Walter Rohrl, the latter winning the Pikes Peak hillclimb.

Though short-lived, the Quattro S1 E2 showcases the lunacy of Group B and the lengths engineers will go to in order to make a car as fast as it can go.
